  • "I worked there for a year because a guy who was on his military service came in after me. He missed only one year, so I had to leave; otherwise, I would have stayed there to this day. I gained twelve kilos in a year. When I describe it to you, the foreman came in May and said, 'Guys, we've got it, one hundred per cent. So what?' 'Shall we cancel the night shift?' So he cancelled the night shifts. He comes in June, scratches his head and says, 'Guys, we're at one hundred and fifty per cent. So we will cancel the afternoon shift.' So we cancelled the afternoon shifts. He comes in October and says, 'Guys, we got two hundred per cent, but we can't continue that next year. So what? We'll cancel the whole week, we'll only go on Fridays.' For real, we only worked on Fridays. Everybody had their time sheets filled, everything was ready, but we only worked on Fridays. Unbelievable work. Truly."

  • "I used to wear jeans, they had to be worn out, otherwise it was unthinkable. And of course, a denim jacket. When my parents poured acid on them, I had to choose something else. So I found my father's army pants, which I wore, and one brace over my t-shirt - they all could have gone crazy. Add to that my long hair, beard - well, finished. When I came out, the grandmothers were crossing themselves and immediately went to report me to the cops. I only walked about 200 meters before the check came. 'Identification.' But I already had a photo taken with my beard and long hair. I managed it. 'Thank you.' And I went on."

  • "I've been transcribing books since '81. I used to bind them in coloured paper or something similar. But I still had to wrap it in plastic to hold it together, because, of course, the colored paper peeled off. I supplied the letters with propisot - I had propisot, so it was fine. The first ten books, I did that way. The next twenty or twenty-five I then bound in a bookbinding way."

  • "I had a girlfriend and we went to Prague. I don't know how many of us were there: a hundred, two hundred at most. From Wenceslas Square, we went down the street to Staromák, where Petr Uhl (more likely Peter Uher) was performing, and they started filming there. Then the cops came from behind, everyone turned around, and suddenly we were in the front row. Then they sprayed us and then dispersed us. That was winter, October, October 28th."

  • "I transcribed books, lyrics, and then I even started to publish them in some covers. I made a publishing house called Red Riding Hood. I published about thirty titles. That was my free time, and it was usually the reason I got kicked out of an apartment, because typing at night was dangerous for the landlords."

Ivan Roemer was born on 15 February 1959 in Přerov. He lived with his parents in Kojetín. He apprenticed for the Přerov Chemical Works, where he worked for some time. Then, he changed several jobs. In Kojetín, he became involved in the local underground community. He and his friends in the town and its surroundings organised secret music festivals, Lennoniáda and Akustiáda, in the 1980s. He went to secret festivals all over Moravia, during which he experienced several police raids. But he didn‘t just stick to music. He was a member of the Society of Friends of the United States of America (SPUSA), which sought to refute the lies and disinformation campaign of the ruling powers against the United States of America. He signed several petitions, such as Several Sentences calling for a change of government, and rewrote and published over thirty titles of books banned by the regime, by authors such as Václav Havel and Jan Pelcl. He also participated in anti-regime demonstrations in Prague and during the Velvet Revolution in Brno. After the fall of communism, he spent some time in business, building and renovating miniature golf courses. At the time of filming in 2025, he lived in Kojetín.
