  • "In the morning, at about 6 o'clock, my mother woke me up and said, 'Wake up, the Russians have taken us.' Then I went into town with the boys. We passed my then-love, who was hanging laundry outside and crying that I was going to war, so I reassured her that I probably wouldn't. We got to the square, sat there, smoked, and listened to what was going on on my little transistor radio."

  • "What was the name of the first group you put together?" "It was called Mercury. And it was the grandmother of Jirka Gelner [a member of the band] - who was one of the first in Chrudim to have a beautiful guitar, Jolana Diskant, who can be seen, for example, in Starci na chmelu (Old Men on Hops) - so his grandmother made us black vests like the Beatles or Olympic had in their time. Then we had black shirts with gold buttons and M-shaped embroidery like Mercury... luxury back then. Nobody would wear that today, but we wore it as a uniform and we were proud of it."
