  • "That building down just over the border on the right, that's where the Plný family lived. A little further down the curve is the former Hitler Youth headquarters, nowadays the Poles have that as a recreation centre. And our building used to be first used by the army. The soldiers were there when they were guarding the border, and now they also have it as a holiday cottage."

  • "I was in Suché Dole. My mother worked in the JZD and herded heifers. We also had to herd, drive and drive them out when we needed to. And I was just with her at Čertova skála when the Russians went to Slavný. This is where the Slavný - Slaný signposts turned. So the armored cars went up into the mountains, and that's where it ended."

  • "My mother comes from five children. Her mother died at thirty-five and had five children. The youngest one was two months old and was given to an aunt in Machovská Lhota to raise. They then adopted him, he had their surname Šrůtek. The fourth sister, who was about two or three years old, they took her to Náchod to raise."

Marie Pohlová was born on November 1, 1956. Her mother was displaced from the village of Nouzín in Kladsko after the war and found a new home in Suchý Důl near Police nad Metují. She grew up with her two siblings on a farm in Suchý Důl, which was nationalised by the communists in 1958. Her parents and grandfather joined a unified agricultural cooperative (JZD). She trained as a furrier and worked for many years in the Kara factory. In August 1968, she followed Soviet soldiers as they wandered around. She married in 1976 and she and her husband raised two children. It was not until after the fall of the Iron Curtain that she came to Kladsko. After 1989, the family also regained the property as part of restitution proceedings. At the time of filming (2025) she lived with her family in Police nad Metují.
