Jiří Březina

* 1943

  • “When I was in first grade, a certain officer who had served in Great Britain during the war came to visit us, and we had to sing Masaryk’s favorite song Ach synku, synku, doma-li jsi. A year or two later, the gym was packed with all the pupils and a Soviet officer came instead. For him, we sang Široka strana maja radnaja. We practically had no idea what any of it meant — we just thought it was nice to sing something together. But the shift from Czech statehood to the atmosphere of the 1950s was truly dramatic.”

-Jiří Březina was born on June 14, 1943, in the village of Praskačka near Hradec Králové. However, he and his parents soon moved to Hradec Králové, where his father commanded the local military garrison and therefore received an official apartment in the city. Later, his father refused to join the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ), which led to his rank being taken away and his dismissal from the army. Jiří Březina enrolled at a technical secondary school specializing in water management, successfully completed his studies, and in the early 1960s was admitted to the Czech Technical University (ČVUT) in Prague. He graduated in 1968 and then completed his mandatory one-year military service, which he spent in the Dejvice district of Prague. During the period of normalization, he and his wife began to reflect on questions of religion, reading the Bible and discussing matters of faith. As a result, Jiří Březina was repeatedly summoned to the State Security (StB) headquarters for questioning. After the Velvet Revolution, he began working as a private entrepreneur in Hradec Králové. In 2023, he was living with his family in Hradec Králové.
