  • "We were in Yugoslavia in Makarska for a training camp. In the morning they told us - that the Russians had invaded us. They forbade us to leave there. We were just packing up to go home. We were there for the next three weeks. Some military attaché - it was Dukla - some military attaché forbade us to go, so the Yugoslavs hosted us there and it was good. Then we didn't go back through Hungary, but we went back through Austria. We still went to Prater, to have a nice meal, who knows what it will be like there. So we came back, the whole bus. Prater was quite an experience at that time. As people were running away, it was a mess. I had forgotten those stories where I forgot some documents at home and then hurrah back again. And then, when we were crossing through that Velenice, the customs people told us that we were the first bus to come back complete. We arrived in Týn nad Vltavou and in Týn nad Vltavou - around - there were Russian tanks buried and heading there. There's a tank unit there, so they were heading for the town or the... So we were in reality."

  • "We were training in 1968 and he was crossing the river, a short traverse. He came up to like... they made an entrance of stakes to hold back the water so there would be a step. And the water was flowing through it and he fell down and this pushed him on the stakes and with the water flowing through he just couldn't do anything. So I got out of the boat, I jumped in, I ripped the boat off of him. He came up and started slapping and talking to me in German. Supposedly, there were some great guys that pressed the time, how long he was there, and they said it was almost three minutes. Normally he was completely calm, he was like... well, he was coughing and he was good. The way the water just flowed in there with the air, he doesn't even remember."

  • "I wanted to be a coach, so I actually kind of asked for it. I told the Dukla boss at the time that I wanted to do it, that I was going to quit, and he said, 'Peter, look, there's no job.' We went to Dzúr for the bonuses and Dzúr said, 'If anyone has a problem, tell me, we'll sort it out.' So I applied. I basically broke military regulations because I bypassed the commander, right. He had to go to him, so I had to go with him and I told him that I wanted to be a trainer when I finished my career, but he said there was no room, so I was going to quit. And he said, 'That's no problem, let's get the wires hot.' On Monday there was an order in Brandýs, a place in the chart. And they started coming after me. So at first I said I was going to defend the title, and then I said it was pointless, so I quit."

Petr Sodomka was born on 19 May 1947 in Pardubice. Since childhood he had a positive attitude to sport and at the age of twelve he discovered the magic of water slalom at the local boathouse. He was so captivated by the sport that he started to train regularly in the local boating club. He spent his military service in Dukla Bechyně, which was focused on water slalom. In 1967 he participated in the World Championships for the first time and won gold medals. After his military service he decided to stay in Dukla and continue to represent Czechoslovakia. He won valuable metals at practically every world championship and became a world legend of water sports. In 1972, at the premiere of water slalom at the Summer Olympics in Munich, he finished 8th in the individual race. He retired from the sport after winning a gold medal at the World Championships in Spittal an der Drau, Austria in 1977. After his career he briefly devoted himself to coaching and then left Dukla in 1979. After the fall of the communist regime, he started a business in the field of boat manufacturing and building. At the time of recording (2025) he was living with his family in Hradec Králové.
