František Knebort

* 1944

  • "Yes, they came to see us there, yes. Even though we went there. They invited us to dinner or lunch, but that was no problem, even though we were actually officers, we were in the army, so of course we were in civilian clothes. They came to see us, definitely, in any case." "But wasn't that actually forbidden? Were you being watched?" "Well, of course, we had a 'tail' with us, but he was so unobtrusive that it didn't cause any problems."

  • "At that time, I was actually the captain, so Tonda had to listen to me." – "Was he a good footballer? Do you have fond memories of him?" – "Tonda was an excellent footballer, of course. He had it in his legs. A good guy, a good footballer." – "So it was a pleasure to play with him?" – "Of course, but he had to listen to me."

  • "I left Bohemka to join the army. In 1963, I enlisted in Dukla. I was there for six months, and we went for a check-up at the military hospital. There, they found that I had some kind of heart condition. So they discharged me from the military service, and I spent a lot of time going from doctor to doctor to find out what it was. That's how I met Dr. Hamr in Krč. And he said... I actually met him when he caught me at the Tatry Smíchov winter tournament, and I told him what was going on. He invited me in, examined me, and found out that it was due to some kind of injury from a ball, but that I was perfectly fine. So I started playing again."

František Knebort was born on January 19, 1944, in Prague to František and Irena Knebort, a family of civil servants. He spent most of his childhood with his grandmother in Vyšehrad. His talent was noticed by representatives of Slavoje Vyšehrad, who asked his family if little František would like to start representing the local club. The witness‘s football beginnings are therefore linked to Slavoje Vyšehrad, where he joined the division A team at the age of sixteen. He began his professional career at Bohemians Prague (then ČKD Prague) and spent his military service at Dukla Prague, but left due to health problems and returned to Bohemians. However, he eventually returned and played for Dukla until 1968. After this engagement, he transferred first to Slavia Prague, then to Teplice, and finally back to Bohemians. He spent the end of his football career from 1975 to 1983 with Tatry Smíchov. František Knebort also became a member of the Olympic team that won silver medals at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo (1964).
